Pilots Shut Down Clams

HAMPTON, VA - The Edenton Steamers dropped their first game of the second half by a score of 7-3 to the Peninsula Pilots on Sunday night. Edenton (0-1, 12-17) lost its third game against Peninsula (1-0, 20-8) who has won seven of its last 10 contests. Andrew Hinckley shouldered the loss for the Teal and Black. Hinckley (1-1) lasted 4.1 innings surrendering seven runs on five hits and five walks to one strikeout. Alex Mauricio was the pitcher of record for the Pilots. Mauricio (2-1) allowed one earned run on two hits with one walk to three strikeouts in four innings of work. Peninsula opened up the scoring the in the bottom of the first. Nick Walker led off with a double, coming home on back-to-back ground balls. The Steamers tied things up in the second. Trey Hair started the inning with a double, heading to third on a dropped third strike. Tony Rosselli bounced a ground ball to first to score Hair and even the score, 1-1. The Pilots retook the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs, and they opened up a big lead in the fourth. Joe Poduslenko led off with a single and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Walker knocked a sacrifice fly to right to score one, and Kyle McPherson cleared the bases with a triple. In the next at bat, McPherson came home when Aaron Aucker dropped a grounder at third base. The Clams attempted a rally in the final two innings. Trey Hair's eighth inning homer cut the Peninsula lead to 7-2, and the Steamers made things interesting in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs. In the next at bat, a slow chopper to short off the bat of Tyler Ammerman left everyone safe, cutting the score to 7-3. The Edenton Steamers take to the road for two days, facing the Lexington County Blowfish on Monday and the High Point-Thomasville HiToms on Tuesday.
