Peninsula Pilots News Release
HAMPTON, Va. - In a back and forth contest, the Peninsula Pilots fell 6-5 to the Wilson Tobs on Sunday night at War Memorial Stadium. In a game that was back and forth, the Tobs (19-19, 5-5) used clutch hitting in the 10th inning to earn a hard-fought victory over the Pilots (25-12, 6-4).
Tied at five apiece in the 10th innings, walks by Webster and Chad Frazier (Concord) set up the go-ahead run that was scored on a RBI single by Justin Datillo (UNC Pembroke).
Zack Mozingo (East Carolina) evened his record to 1-1 after pitching three innings of one-run ball. Dillon Meadows (TCU) fell to 0-2 on the season.
Wilson scored first with a single run in the third inning. Justin Datillo (UNC Pembroke) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Tyler Howsley (UC-San Diego) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. Logan Baldwin (Georgia Southern) followed with a single to center to score Howsley for the first run of the ballgame.
Peninsula took the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Charlie Cody (Virginia). Kyle McPherson (James Madison) reached on a one-out single before Cody followed with his first home run of the season.
The lead would not last long as Wilson plated three runs in the fifth inning to retake the lead. Howsley led off the inning with a triple to center and came around on Baldwin's bloop double to left. After an error put two runners on, Andrew Webster (Barton) put the Tobs ahead with a two-out, two-run double to left-center for a 4-2 advantage.
Peninsula cut the deficit to one in the sixth inning. Nick Walker (Old Dominion) led off the inning with a single to right field. After advancing to second on a ground out, two wild pitches allowed Walker to score to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Pilots tied the game up in the seventh inning. Walks by Joe Poduslenko (Seton Hall) and McPherson put two on with one out before Cody hit his third RBI of the night with a single to right to score Poduslenko. They had a chance to score more but left the bases loaded.
Wilson retook the lead in the eighth inning on a RBI triple by Jack Larsen (UC-San Diego) to score Ryan Cleveland (Georgia Southern), who singled to lead off the inning.
Peninsula immediately tied it in the eighth inning when Connor Sorge (Central Missouri) scored on a RBI groundout by Darian Carpenter (VCU).
In a dramatic ninth inning, Wilson had a chance to take the lead once again but a strong throw from Walker in left field nabbed CJ Ballard (Georgia Southern) trying to score on a single from second. Ballard reached on an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Cameron Balego (Mercyhurst) singled through the left side but a strong throw by Walker and a nice tag by Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) kept the game tied at four apiece.
On the mound, Brett Smith (Old Dominion) got the start and pitched four solid innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and striking out four. In relief, Colin Nowak (Southern Indiana) threw three innings of one-run ball and struck out six.
The Pilots host the Copperheads on Monday night for Hunger Games Night. It is the final day of the Peninsula Pilots Fight Hunger Food Drive as fans are encouraged to bring canned foods to help the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.
