Phoenix Rising FC News Release
PHOENIX - Phoenix Rising completed the entire month of June without allowing a goal after shutting down Orange County, 1-0, in front of a sellout crowd of 7,001 fans at Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex. It was the club's seventh sellout of the season.
With Phoenix Rising down a man for the entire second half because of a 35th-minute red card issued to Kody Wakasa, Goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski made two huge saves in the late minutes to maintain his club-record clean sheet streak.
His biggest save came in stoppage time. Woszczynski moved to his left to stop an incoming Orange County shot. But the ball was deflected on its way to the net, forcing Woszczynski to extend out his right arm in a desperate attempt to stop the shot. He managed to knock the ball wide of the net and maintain his clean sheet. (SAVE)
The veteran goalkeeper now has five straight clean sheets and hasn't allowed a goal in 466 consecutive minutes, both new club records.
Phoenix Rising took the lead early in the match thanks to the team's leading scorer Chris Cortez. In the 13th minute, midfielder Kevon Lambert sent a lofty diagonal ball from the center of the pitch toward the far left post.
Cortez got to the ball at the last moment and beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. (GOAL)
Tonight's win solidifies the club's spot at No. 2 in the Western Conference with 35 points, just two points behind conference-leading Real Monarchs. The top four teams in the conference host first-round playoff matches.
Phoenix Rising has an off weekend and will be back in league play on Saturday, July 14, at Fresno Football Club. The club returns home on Friday, July 20 hosting Seattle Sounders 2.
