October 28, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Philadelphia Soul News Release

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League has announced they have signed their first two players via free agency, kicker Brian Gowins and offensive/defensive lineman C.J. McClain, both to two-year deals. As is club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gowins spend the last four seasons with the Grand Rapids Rampage of the AFL under current Soul head coach Michael Trigg. The AFL Kicker of the Year in 2001 and a member of the All Rookie Team in 2000, Gowins holds the Rampage franchise record for longest field goal made (56 yards), as well as the franchise record for consecutive field goals made with nine. Gowins has spent time with the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. Gowins has connected on eight game-winning kicks during his four-year AFL career.

Gowins ranks as the all-time leading scorer at Northwestern and was selected to the First Team All-Big Ten by the media and second team by the coaches in 1997.

McClain spent last season with the Orlando Predators after following the Nashville Kats to Georgia in 2002. McClain has recorded 56 tackles (32 solo), six sacks, six pass breakups, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in his three seasons in the AFL.

An All-SEC candidate at defensive end for the Arkansas Razorbacks, McClain recorded 50 or more tackles in each of his final three campaigns.

The Soul will make their AFL debut on Sunday, February 8 at 3 p.m. live on NBC Sports against fellow expansion foe, New Orleans Voodoo. Season ticket plans are on sale now and can be purchased for as low as $80. For more information on season tickets call 1-888-PHIL-AFL.
