Philadelphia Freedoms News Release
(VILLANOVA, Pa.) - The Philadelphia Freedoms were defeated by the Texas Wild joined by the Bryan Brothers, 21-14, at the Pavilion at Villanova.
Philadelphia Freedoms' Sam Groth, record holder for fastest serve, jumpstarted the evening with a win over Alex Bogomolov of the Texas Wild, 5-4 during men's singles.
The women's singles set was next with Eugenie Bouchard of the Texas Wild winning over Vicky Duval of the Philadelphia Freedoms, 5-1.
Texas Wild saw another victory during the mixed doubles set when Daria Jurak and Mike Bryan of the Wild beat Liezel Huber and Sam Groth of the Freedoms, 5-3.
During the women's doubles set, Philadelphia Freedoms' Liezel Huber and Vicky Duvel took on Texas Wild's Daria Jurak and Eugenie Bouchard. An injury pulled Duvel out during the fourth game of the set. Despite a strong effort by Huber to defend the Freedoms' court solo, the Texas Wild won the women's doubles set, 5-1.
An electrifying men's doubles set ended the match with intense volleys and a tiebreaker to close the set. Top ranked doubles team Mike and Bob Bryan of the Texas Wild defeated Sam Groth and Jordan Kerr of the Philadelphia Freedoms, 5-4.
During halftime, twins in the audience were invited to the court to take photos with the Bryan Brothers. The evening also featured an appearance by Billie Jean King who presented the Hamlin Family Foundation Billie Jean King Character Award (see attached for additional press release on award announcement).
The Freedoms' next match is Monday, July 22 at the Washington Kastles. The next home match is Tuesday, July 23 against the Boston Lobsters at the Pavilion at Villanova University.
