Phelps and Offense Shine as Yankees Pound Chiefs 8-1

Syracuse, NY - For the second consecutive start David Phelps didn't allow a run. The only difference was this time he did it for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, backed by plenty of run support from the Yankee offense en route to a 8-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs on Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, New York.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense exploded for six runs in the home half of the second inning. The Yankee rally started with an RBI single off the bat of Ray Kruml, which plated Cole Garner. Later in the inning, Kevin Russo roped a two-RBI single to left with the bases loaded. It was Russo's first at bat since June 24th at Indianapolis. Corban Joseph and Ronnier Mustelier capped the Yankee rally with back-to-back RBI singles.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added an insurance run in the bottom of the third, increasing its lead to 7-1. Russo roped a sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowing Garner to score from third. The Yankees added one more in the bottom of the seventh on a Ramiro Pena RBI single to right-centerfield. The Chiefs got on the board in the top half of the eighth on a long solo shot to straight away centerfield by Jim Negrych, bringing Syracuse to within 8-1. Russo finished the night 3-4 with three RBI. Every player in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lineup reached base safely, and eight of the nine players in the Yankee lineup recorded a hit.

Phelps picked up the win for the Yankees, improving to 1-0 on the season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He went 6 2/3 innings allowing just three hits, while striking out seven and walking three. Phelps exited the game with runners on first and second and two outs, but Juan Cedeno came in and closed the door on the Chiefs in the seventh. Tanner Roark suffered the loss for the Chiefs falling to 4-12 on the season. He allowed seven of the Yankees eight runs in the contest.

The Yankees and Chiefs wrap up their series Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Right-hander John Maine gets the nod for the Yankees, while Zach Duke heads to the hill for the Chiefs. Following the final pitch, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees travel to Rochester to continue the home stand with a four game series against the Charlotte Knights, beginning at 7:05 on Monday night.
