Norfolk wins over Lehigh Valley

Norfolk used a six-run sixth inning and Jason Berken tossed seven strong innings as the Tides knocked off the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 8-3 Saturday night at Harbor Park.

The Tides trailed 3-0 and had just two hits over the first five innings, but Norfolk erupted for six runs on five hits in the sixth frame. Joe Mahoney had a three-run homer in the inning, while Blake Davis and Carlos Rojas added RBI base hits.

All six runs in the sixth were charged to Tyson Brummett (3-2), who allowed four hits and two walks while recording one out.

Norfolk added to its lead in the seventh on an RBI triple by L.J. Hoes, then scored another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Nate McLouth. Hoes, who had his 20-game hitting streak snapped on Friday, also singled in the contest to up his average to .322.

Berken (2-3) picked up the win, as he yielded three runs on eight hits in seven solid innings. Berken gave up all three runs over the first two innings before settling down to hold the IronPigs to three hits over his final five innings of work. He struck out two and walked two while throwing 72 of his season-high 106 pitches for strikes.

Rojas, Davis, McLouth and Lew Ford each had two hits for Norfolk, which has now won eight of its last nine home contests. Ford singled, doubled and walked three times in the contest, upping his average to .339.

The two clubs will wrap up their four-game set on Sunday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 6:15. Brian Matusz (1-0, 0.00) is set to take the mound for Norfolk against left-hander Tom Cochran (5-2, 3.82).
