Saratoga Spine Spotlight Player of the Week

Oliver Lauridsen is our Saratoga Spine Spotlight Player of the Week. The "Great Dane" has one goal and seven assists for the Adirondack Phantoms so far this season. "Ollie" is a third-year pro from Denmark who previously played at St. Cloud State in Minnesota. The hulking 6-foot-6 defenseman is 7th all-time for the Adirondack Phantoms with 178 career games and is one of only three players to have skated in every game this season. Last year, he played in 15 games for the Philadelphia Flyers making his debut on March 30 and then scoring his first two career NHL goals in back-to-back games on April 23 and April 25.

That's our Saratoga Spine Spotlight Player of the Week, Oliver Lauridsen.

Last Week

Friday, February 21: Albany Devils 4 - Adirondack Phantoms 2

A pair of shorthanded goals would spell trouble for the Adirondack Phantoms as they fell at home to their Northway Rivals 4-2. Albany took a 6 games to 5 lead in the season series over Adirondack and a 23-22 lead in the all-time series with one game remaining. Kyle Flanagan received #2 Star of the Game honors with a goal and an assist. Matt Mangene added a goal and Tyler Brown had a pair of helpers. Rod Pelley's top-shelf backhander on a shorthanded rush late in the second period would hold up as the game-winner.

Saturday, February 22: Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3 - Adirondack Phantoms 2

In front of 17,585 at Wells Fargo Center including a bus-load of fans who traveled down from Glens Falls, the host Adirondack Phantoms fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2. Bridgeport overcame a third-period deficit with a pair of goals in the come-from-behind win.

Carsen Chubak earned just his second start of the season for Adirondack and made 26 saves in front of the big, major-league crowd.

Nick Cousins scored his fifth of the year early in the second period. Chris VandeVelde's ninth of the year on a 5-on-3 backdoor slam early in the third period pushed Adirondack out in front but the lead was short-lived as the Sound Tigers would respond just 22 seconds later with a shorthanded goal to equalize. Aaron Ness scored with 10:39 remaining for the game-winner and Anders Nilsson stopped 26 shots between the pipes for the win. The Phantoms had no shortage of chances; a 1-for-10 performance on the power play was the key stat of the night.

Upcoming Opponents

Utica Comets (22-25-7,51 points) - Affiliation, Vancouver Canucks

Friday, February 28 (7:00) - Memorial Auditorium, Utica NY

Standings - 14th place, Western Conference

Season Series - Phantoms lead 1-0. This is Game 2 out of 4.

Last Meeting - December 7, ADK 3 - UTI 1

Top Scorers - Pascal Pelletier (10-32-42), Benn Ferriero (17-20-37), Alexander Grenier (15-17-32)

Info - The newest entry into the American Hockey League crawled out to a weak start with a 10-game winless streak to open the season (0-8-2). Since that dismal beginning, the Comets have gone a respectable 22-17-5. Utica was recently on a four-game win streak but have now lost their most recent two with a 2-1 setback to Albany on Sunday and then a 3-0 loss against San Antonio on Wednesday. This is the first trip to Utica for an AHL Adirondack team since February 5, 1993 when the Adirondack Red Wings defeated the Utica Devils 2-1 at Memorial Auditorium. The last professional game between the two markets before this season was February 16, 2001 when the Adirondack IceHawks and Mohawk Valley Prowlers squared off in the United Hockey League. Memorial Auditorium was built in 1959 in downtown Utica and was also a part-time home for the legendary Clinton Comets who mostly dominated the old Eastern Hockey League from 1954-73.

Syracuse Crunch (20-23-9, 49 points) - Affiliation, Tampa Bay Lightning

Saturday, March 1 (7:00) - Onodonga County War Memorial, Syracuse, NY

Sunday, March 2 (5:00) - Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY

Standings - 12th place, Eastern Conference

Season Series - Crunch lead 1-0. Games 2 and 3 out of 6 are this weekend.

Last Meeting - November 30, SYR 1 - ADK 0

Top Scorers - Vladislav Namestnikov (15-19-34), Cedric Paquette (14-18-32), Brett Connolly (13-19-32)

Info - The defending Eastern Conference Champions have certainly fallen on harder times in 2013-14. Syracuse had a dismal stretch recently in which they won only one out of 12 (1-8-3) but bounced back last weekend to post impressive victory over Hershey by scores of 5-0 and 5-2. The Crunch were founded in 1992 and are part of a long and storied history of professional hockey in Syracuse, NY including the Syracuse Blazers of the EHL and NAHL from 1967-77 among other teams. The Syracuse Stars were the first ever AHL Calder Cup Champions in 1937 when they defeated the Philadelphia Ramblers 3 games to 1. That remains the only AHL title in Syracuse hockey history. The old War Memorial at Oncenter has hosted Syracuse sports and other events since its opening in 1951. That includes the Syracuse Nationals of the NBA who played there from 1951-1963 before moving to become the Philadelphia 76ers.

25 Terrific Seasons

Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
