Youngstown Phantoms News Release

OVERVIEW: The Youngstown Phantoms (33-13-5) earned a sweep of the Sioux City Musketeers last weekend, taking over the top spot in the Eastern Conference after Friday's win, before assuming the number one position in the USHL overall following the victory on Saturday.

LAST WEEKEND RECAP

FRIDAY: The Youngstown Phantoms (32-13-5) collected a 4-2 win over the Sioux City Musketeers on Friday night. Forward Kevin Conley potted a pair of goals, while defenseman Vas Kolias and forward Ryan Lomberg each had lone tallies. The win extends the Phantoms' winning streak to 13 games, and moves them into the top spot in the USHL's Eastern Conference.

Like last weekend, the power play was put to work early, as 15:11 into the opening frame, forward Matt Alvaro crashed the net from the right wing and sent a pass through the crease to Conley who tapped it in past Sioux City netminder Collin Olson, giving the Phantoms a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

After Sioux City's Adam Johnson tied the game, 1-1, 8:50 into the second, Youngstown regained the lead at 17:23, when Kolias came streaking down the left wing and sent a shot five-hole past Olson, giving the Phantoms a 2-1 lead.

Youngstown found the back of the net just over a minute later, when Conley followed up a rebound after a Connor McDonald shot and fired it past Olson, extending the Phantoms' lead to 3-1, 18:34 into the second, on his second goal of the game.

The Phantoms capped off their monstrous second period 56 seconds later, when defenseman Alec Vanko found a wide open Lomberg in the high slot who slammed it into the net, putting the Phantoms up 4-1 after two periods.

The Musketeers cut the Phantoms' lead in half on a goal from Jake Ryczek midway through the third, however that was all the offense Sioux City was able to muster, as Phantoms goaltender Colin DeAugustine stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced to collect his eighth win in a row.

SATURDAY: The Youngstown Phantoms (33-13-5) picked up a 5-1 win over the Sioux City Musketeers on Saturday night. Forwards Matt Alvaro and Kyle Connor each had a pair of goals, while forward Tyler Sheehy scored his first goal as a member of the Phantoms. It was a physical affair as the two sides combined for 207 penalty minutes on the night. With the win, the Phantoms now sit in first place overall in the USHL.

The Phantoms lit the lamp early, as just 3:50 in while shorthanded, forward Josh Nenadal took a shot from the right wing circle that hit some bodies out front and eventually came to Alvaro who popped it in past Sioux City goaltender Collin Olson, putting the Phantoms up, 1-0.

That lead held up throughout the remainder of the first, and in the second, the Phantoms' special teams struck again while on the power play, when forward Kiefer Sherwood sent a pass to Connor coming over the blue line, and he split the Musketeer defense and tucked it past Olson, pushing the Phantoms' lead to 2-0, 4:43 into the frame.

The power play expanded the Phantoms' lead to 3-0 about seven minutes later, when forward Josh Melnick took a shot from the center blueline that was deflected in by Alvaro for his second of the game, 10:21 into the second period.

The Phantoms took that 3-0 lead into the locker room after the second period, and managed to push their lead to 4-0 1:38 into the third with their third power play goal of the game, when forward Taylor Best sent a pass from the left wing corner to Sheehy who slammed it home for his first goal as a member of the Youngstown Phantoms.

After Joe Snively put Sioux City on the board 13:53 into the third, Connor sealed the Phantoms' 14th win in a row with an empty netter from the center red line, capping the 5-1 win for the Phantoms.

UP NEXT: The Phantoms hit the road for the first time in a month when they battle the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday and Saturday, before a Sunday matinee in Chicago against the Steel.
