Phantoms leave Marlies wailin'

PHILADELPHIA - Stefan Ruzicka scored in the seventh round of the shootout to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms over the Toronto Marlies 2-1 at the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday night. Brian Boucher made 23 saves and stopped six of seven Toronto attempts in the shootout, includling the game-clinching stop in the final round, to backstop the win.
Toronto jumped on the board first near the halfway point of the first period. Phil Oreskovic fired a shot from the right point that was blocked in front, but the rebound bounced around and was eventually pushed to Robbie Earl in the right circle. Earl beat Boucher for the 1-0 lead at 9:16.
The Phantoms struggled to generate scoring opportunities and could not beat Toronto goaltender Justin Pogge when the chances did come. But after 48 futile minutes and just 14 shots, the Phantoms finally broke through. Triston Grant took the puck up the left wing and pulled a remarkable toe-drag around a Toronto player in the left circle. He fired a blast on net that Pogge stopped, but Frederik Cabana, returning from a seven game hiatus due to injury, swept to the right post and fired home the rebound to tie the game at 1-1 with 12:01 remaining.
The balance of the third period was scoreless, as was the overtime session. Each team scored a goal in the first two rounds of the shootout, with Jared Ross posting for the Phantoms in the opening round and Jiri Tlusty scoring in the second round for Toronto. But the goaltenders took over after that until Ruzicka's game winner.
The Phantoms are in Norfolk on Saturday night to meet the Admirals before returning to the Wachovia Spectrum on Sunday evening to host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 5:05. The annual Helping Hands Auction will take place during this game, with all proceeds benefiting the Children's Miracle Network at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
