Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Phantoms have acquired the USHL rights to forward James Winkler from the Muskegon Lumberjacks, Youngstown Director of Player Personnel Jason Koehler announced today.
Winkler's acquisition completes the "future considerations" portion of the Phantoms' November trade that sent Blake Christensen to the Lumberjacks. The full deal now reads as Christensen and Youngstown's 2014 fourth round Phase I draft choice in exchange for Muskegon's 2014 Phase I third rounder, 2014 Phase II sixth rounder, and the rights to Winkler.
"James Winkler is a big-bodied power forward, a goal scoring winger," said Koehler. "We probably don't have anybody like him that fits what he could turn into.when he comes in here and gets adjusted, he should be a force."
Winkler, 17, has been placed on Youngstown's affiliate list, as he is currently playing for the Portland Jr. Pirates of the Tier III United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), where he has notched 10 goals and three assists in 36 games.
Measuring in at 6'3" and 195 pounds, the native of York, Maine is committed to Northeastern University. He was originally Muskegon's third round pick (37th overall) in the 2013 Phase II draft.
He was recently ranked 110th on the NHL Central Scouting midterm rankings for North American-based skaters ahead of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, joining Maxim Letunov (68th) and JJ Piccinich (164th) on that same list. He was also named to the USPHL All-Star Game this season.
Single game tickets are on sale now for all Phantoms' home games at the Covelli Centre. Phantoms 10-Game Flex Plans are also available starting at the low price of just $89.
