Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
#24 JOHN KIVISTO
Last Wednesday, the Phantoms acquired a skilled two-way defenseman by trading with the Alpena Ice Diggers for John Kivisto. A native of Milford, Michigan, Kivisto is expected to add some scoring punch from the blueline and will help anchor the Phantoms second power play unit. Prior to joining the Phantoms, John scored three goals and added six assists in just 16 games. In last weekend's split with the Ice Diggers in Alpena, John registered his first point as a Phantom, assisting on the game-winning goal in Saturday's 3-1 win. John's older brother, Kurt, is a freshman center at Michigan State
#14 MIKE MALTESE
Mike is one of six Phantoms back from last year's playoff squad. In just 22 games this season, he has already recorded more assists (13) than last season, and his seven goals have him on pace to easily eclipse his total of 10 from the 2004-2005 campaign. Like John Kivisto, Mike is featured on the Phantoms second power play unit, and is a penalty-killing threat as well. The Eastpointe, Michigan native leads the Phantoms with three game-winning goals. In six games against Alpena this season, Maltese has a goal and two assists.
Please be sure to keep your eye on both of these players on Wednesday!

Tip of the Week:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enforcer is a term referring to a hockey player who âprotects' and defends their highly-skilled teammates. Opponents that become physical, rough and overly aggressive towards a skill player must always keep an eye out for that team's enforcer, who will take matters into their own hands and consider retaliation towards them. One characteristic shared by many enforcers is a high number of penalty minutes for infractions such as fighting and roughing.
