NAHL North American Hockey League

NAHL names players of the week

Published on November 30, 2005 under North American Hockey League (NAHL) News Release

With six points each, Helena Bighorns forward Blake Page and Southern Minnesota Express forward Ryan Guentzel have been named co-winners of the Sher-wood NAHL Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending November 27

It's been a rough season for the Bighorns, but they have won two straight and three of five, and one of the big contributors to the rebound has been Page. The San Juan Capistrano, California native was a powerhouse for Helena last weekend, starting with his performance against Bismarck on Friday, November 25. With the Bighorns nursing a 1-0 first period lead, Page scored a shorthanded goal, his league-leading third of the season, to extend the Helena margin. In the second period, he set up the Bighorns' third goal. Then after the Bobcats got on the board in the second, Page set up the fourth Helena tally. As the game wound down and the Bobcats had drawn to a one-goal deficit, 6-5, Page deposited a last minute empty netter into the vacant Bismarck goal to seal the Helena victory.

The next night against Billings, Page's early second period goal extended the Helena lead to 3-0. Before the period ended, Page added another assist as the Bighorns eventually defeated the Bulls 6-2. One of the NAHL's better penalty killers, Page was key in the Bighorns shutting down the Bulls power play, which was blanked in five man-advantage opportunities.

The first-year Express have enjoyed a fine first half and Guentzel, their second leading scorer, has averaged better than a point per game. This weekend, the Woodbury, Minnesota native got the Express off and running against North Iowa on Friday night, scoring the game's first goal By the first minute of the third period, the Express had sprinted to a 6-0 lead and Guentzel had added another goal and an assist. He chipped in a second assist late in the third period in a game that would end as a 9-2 final.

The following night proved to be another dominant performance by the Express at the expense of the Outlaws, and Guentzel contributed a goal and assist in the third period of the contest, that ended 6-1.

With 29 points in 25 games, Guentzel has moved into a tie for seventh place among all NAHL scorers.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Ryan Bunger (Bozeman), Derek Danowski (Texas), Mike Glaesmer (Wasilla), Kyle Kraemer (Wichita Falls), Drew Satterley (Mahoning Valley).

GOALIES DALTON, REDMANN SHARE SHER-WOOD NAHL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Two of the league's top goaltenders, Bozeman Icedogs' Matt Dalton and Texas Tornado's Troy Redmann share the honor of being named Sher-wood NAHL Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending November 27.

Dalton has been the Number One goalie for the Icedogs during their 20-game winning streak and this weekend the Clinton, Ontario native picked up a pair of wins, including his league leading fourth shutout of the season on Saturday night against Bismarck, in which he stopped all 26 shots he faced. The night before, in a 5-3 win over, he faced five Billings power plays and did not allow a single goal.

In addition to being tops in shutouts, Dalton leads the league in goals-against average (1.69) and save percentage (.940).

Redmann is right behind Dalton in goals-against (2.04) and he also leads all NAHL goaltenders with 22 games played and is tied for third in save percentage (.927).

This week, in three games, the Brea, California native allowed only one goal in each outing, including a 1-0 loss in overtime to Texarkana. He was named the second star of the game on November 23 against Wichita Falls in a 4-1 victory and first star of the game two nights later against Texarkana in another 4-1 win. In the three games, Redmann stopped 84 of 87 shots.
