Edmonton Trappers News Release
Left fielder Ben Petrick drove in six runs as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox downed the Edmonton Trappers 15-2 Sunday afternoon at Sky Sox Stadium. Petrick needed only a single to hit for the cycle as he doubled, tripled and homered. The win was the sixth in a row for the Sky Sox, who are presently in first place in the Central Division of the Pacific Coast League. For Edmonton the loss was the club's fourth in a row and drops their record on this road trip to 3-4. The Trappers are 10-17 away from TELUS Field. Edmonton has struggled in recent years against Colorado Springs, posting a 10-21 record against the Sky Sox since the beginning of the 1999 season. The Trapper pitching staff, which allowed only 21 home runs in the first 44 games of the season yielded two more longballs on Sunday and have now given up six homers in this series. Edmonton and Colorado Springs conclude this four-game set on Monday afternoon at Sky Sox Stadium. The Trappers will return to Edmonton on Tuesday to begin an eight-game homestand against the New Orleans Zephyrs.
For the third consecutive day the Trappers got on the board first. Edmonton plated one run in the top of the first inning off ex-Trapper Chris Michalak (5-4) to take the lead. With one out third baseman Scott Hodges singled and advanced to second on a base hit by Terrmel Sledge. Valentino Pascucci followed with a double that plated Hodges and gave the Trappers a brief lead. With two out and one on in the bottom of the first inning veteran slugger Greg Vaughn took Edmonton starter Britt Reames deep for this eighth home run of the season. Petrick added a two-run triple later in the inning to give the Sky Sox a 4-1 advantage after the first frame. Colorado Springs chased Reames with a five-run third inning that put the game away early. Vaughn and Garret Atkins drew walks to open the inning and Mandy Romero followed with a single that plated Vaughn from second. Petrick then came to the plate for the second time in the game and drove a Reames pitch over the wall in left field for his seventh home run of the season. David Newhan doubled and Reames was lifted from the game. He was replaced by Hansel Izquierdo, who allowed the inherited runner to score.
Colorado Springs kept pouring it one with two more runs in the fourth inning. Clint Barmes singled to start the frame and advanced on a wild pitch. With two out and Barmes at third Izquierdo uncorked another wild pitch that allowed the tenth Sky Sox run to scored. Romero then doubled and scored on a Petrick double. Pascucci homered in the top of the fifth inning to account for the Trappers second run, but Colorado Springs went right back to work in the bottom of the inning, plating three more runs. With two on and one out Barmes doubled home Choo Freeman and Vaughn followed with a base hit that scored Barmes and Luke Allen. Anthony Ferrari replaced Izquierdo and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, but Bryan Hebson allowed a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Allen to cap the scoring. Michalak earned his fifth win, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk, while fanning six in 8.0 innings of work.
