San Diego Sockers News Release

CINCINNATI--The Sockers completed a perfect season with their third championship trophy, defeating the Cincinnati Kings 13-6 to claim their third straight US Open title. San Diego's First Team all-PASL midfielder Brian Farber weaved his way through the Kings defense to score a hat trick and added an assist to earn player of the match honors, while league MVP Kraig Chiles concluded a 53-goal season (counting all games) with another hat trick, his 10th of the year. The Sockers (24-0, 18-0 PASL) finish the season with a 37-game winning streak intact, the second longest in the history of US professional team sports.

The Sockers jumped on the Kings early, scoring in the first thirty seconds of the opening two quarters and leading 7-2 at halftime. Cincinnati came back to outscore the Sockers 3-1 in the third, and when Kwame Sarkodie knocked home his second goal of the game with 12:19 to play, the Kings had climbed within 8-6 and given the 1,107 fans at the Cincinnati Gardens reason to cheer. But a goal by Eduardo Velez just six seconds later off the restart put the Sockers back in front by three, and San Diego ran through a dispirited Cincinnati sixth attacker formation to score the game's final five goals unanswered.

San Diego concludes the first undefeated season in franchise history with three straight PASL and US Open championships. They also won the FIFRA Club Championships in Monterrey, Mexico earlier in the year for a "treble" championship season.
