Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Veteran right-hander Jorge Perez struck out 10, and powered by home runs by Pete Farina and Hector Bernal, led the Yuma Scorpions to a 4-2 victory over the Chico Outlaws Sunday night at Nettleton Stadium...Yuma earning a split of the shortened weekend series that signaled the end of the Golden Baseball League season's first half.

Perez and Outlaws starter Nick Casanova locked up in a terrific pitcher's duel through the first six innings of the contest...and as well as Perez was throwing, Casanova did not allow the Scorpions a hit over the first four frames. Yuma drew first blood in the 5th, though, when Farina blasted a solo homer over the right field wall...then in the 7th, with Beau Hintz on in relief for Chico, Bernal connected for a two-out, three-run homer over the right field wall, putting the Scorpions up 4-0.

The Outlaws scored what turned out to be their only runs in the bottom of the 7th - Perez walked Lino Garcia to lead off the inning...then Gabe Riley singled to right. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, and following a Bryan Silverman strikeout, Todd Gossage delivered a sacrifice fly to right to plate Garcia. Eric Pringle then singled up the middle to drive home Riley to make the score 4-2. The Outlaws would bring the tying run to the plate, but Yuma reliever Jean Carlos Guillen got Steve Boggs to fly out to end the threat. That would be as close as Chico would get, as Guillen and James Garcia combined to keep the Outlaws off the board in the 8th and 9th innings to seal the victory...the Scorpions fifth win over Chico in six tries this season.

Perez (4-2) went six-and-two-thirds innings to pick up the win, with Garcia earning his fifth save of the season...Casanova (0-1) allowed just one run and one hit in six innings of work but was saddled with the hard-luck loss. Riley had three of the Outlaws six hits on the night...Yuma was held to just five hits, but it was enough to improve their season record to 25-19; Chico dropped to 15-27 on the year. The Outlaws will take four days off for the All-Star break, then hit the road for a week's worth of games in Canada...Scott Navarro (0-1) will be on the mound for Chico Friday in the first of a four-game series against the Calgary Vipers. First pitch is 6:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
