Peoria Pirates Announces The Return Of Treasure Life

March 18, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) - Peoria Pirates News Release

PEORIA, IL - The Pirates are back, and so is one of the af2's best community relations programs. "Treasure Life" is designed to reinforce positive character values and encourages Peoria area youth to be "Pirates" by filling their "Treasure" chest each day with life's most valuable traits, actions and experiences.

Treasure is an acronym outlining eight traits needed to build a strong character and to help establish a successful life. These include: Teamwork, Respect, Education, Adversity, Sportsmanship, "You", Relationships, and Effort.

Developed and coordinated by long time Pirates assistant coach Tony Johnson, the program was recognized as the af2's "Best Community Relations Program" in 2002. In the past several years, the program has reached a number of schools, community and business organizations.

In 2008, "Treasure Life" will join the Pirates in the return to Peoria and be a focused part of the team's community relations effort. "I will be working to build off the momentum of the past and introducing new aspects to the program" says Coach Johnson.

The "Treasure Life" student nomination campaign will run again during the season with the help of Caterpillar Inc. and WMBD TV 31. Parents, teachers, coaches and other adults will be asked to identify students who practice and exhibit the "Treasure Life" values. Winners will be invited to a Pirates home game where they'll receive special, on-field recognition during half time. Likewise, Pirate players and staff will continue to do in-person "Treasure Life" programs throughout the year.

"I am also proud to announce the "Faith and Football" program within Treasure Life" says Johnson. "This new program will focus on high school age youth groups throughout the Peoria area." Developed and coordinated by Coach Johnson's daughter, Missy, the group will meet at before each home game. Youth attending the meeting will receive inspirational messages, share fellowship with peers and get a free ticket to that night's game.

"I'm really excited the Pirates have returned to Peoria and the af2" says Johnson. "We know that our community efforts are critical, and look forward to helping make the team successful on and off the field."
