Pensacola's Steve Christie Named SPHL's SBK Player of the Month

CHARLOTTE, NC (January 4, 2012) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced goaltender Steve Christie of the Pensacola Ice Flyers has been selected as the SBK Player of the Month for December.
Christie went 8-2 with a 2.29 goals against average, a save percentage of .923 and one shutout as the Ice Flyers rebounded from a 3-5-2 start and now have the fourth-best winning percentage in the league.
After losing a tough game to Columbus on December 2 where he only gave up one goal, Christie rattled off a five-game winning streak, including a 27-save shutout of the Cottonmouths on December 16. Following a 5-2 loss to Louisiana on December 27, Christie posted wins on three consecutive nights to close out December, stopping 100 of the 107 shots he faced. For the month, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native gave up two or fewer goals in six of his 10 games.
Since joining the Ice Flyers on November 23, Christie is 9-2 with a 2.08 goals against average, a .931 save percentage and two shutouts as the Ice Flyers posted the league's second-best record in December. Christie currently leads all SPHL goaltenders in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts (tied) and is second in wins. While at the University of Manitoba, Christie was named the inaugural winner (2009-2010) of the CIS Men's Hockey Goaltender of the Year award as he led the conference in wins (15) and shutouts (2). Christie also earned CIS First Team All-Canadian honors that season and was the 2010 University of Manitoba Athlete of the Year.
