Mississippi Surge News Release

With a Super Bowl victory a week ago Sunday, Baltimore made it the Year of the Raven in the National Football League. Tuesday night in the Southern Professional Hockey League, it was the night of the Raven, as Ryan Raven led the Pensacola Ice Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the Mississippi Surge.

Raven, a right winger, scored both goals for Pensacola in the victory, which sent the Surge to its fifth straight loss. The Surge's last victory came in Pensacola, in a 3-2 shootout win on February 2nd. It didn't take long for Raven to make an impact on the game.

He scored the opening goal just 40 seconds into the game. Another Ryan, Salvis, and Jordan Chong assisted on the goal putting Pensacola into the early lead. The Surge came back on Kevin Hamel's power play goal assisted by Adam Stuart and Jay Silvia. For Hamel, a defenseman, it was his second goal in only nine games with the Surge. That goal tied the game at 6:49 of the first period.

The teams skated through a scoreless second period with Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley making 11 saves (30 on the game) and Pensacola's Ross MacKinnon making six saves (28 on the game).

With the score tied in the third period, Raven scored his second goal of the night early in the third period at the 2:26 mark. Salvis picked up his second assist of the game and Mike MacIntyre also assisted on the game winning goal. The Surge applied heavy pressure for the tying goal with an extra attacker on the ice, and MacKinnon made a big skate save in the closing seconds to preserve the win for Pensacola.

The Surge will try to get back on the winning track at home Thursday night in a Valentine's night match up against the Mississippi RiverKings.
