Mississippi Surge News Release
Biloxi, MS - Pensacola IceFlyers Adam Pawlick, John Dunbar, and Joe Caveney, each scored a pair of goals carrying Pensacola to a 6-2 victory over the Mississippi Surge.
After a scoreless first period, with both Pensacola and Mississippi going 0-2 on power plays, the IceFlyers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead early in the second. IceFlyers Center Adam Pawlick (Assist by Justin Alonzo) scored only 40 seconds into the second period, followed by a shot that passed Dan Clarke by John Dunbar (Assist by Brett Lutes) 56 seconds later. The Surge were finally able to get on the scoreboard when Surge Defenseman Joe Tolles (Assist by Dion Campbell & Jordan Peddle) slapped a shot passed IceFlyers net minder Peter Di Salvo, on a Surge power play.
Pensacola started the third with another score by John Dunbar (Assist by Bennett Schneider & Steve Bergin) extending the IceFlyers lead 3-1. The Surge refused to go down easy, with a power play goal by Surge Defenseman Jarkko Leppanen (Assist by Ian Boots & Joe Tolles) with 13 minutes remaining in the period. Just as the Surge cut the IceFliers lead to one goal, Bill Baker visited the penalty box for the second time on the night, giving Pensacola a power play opportunity. This time, they scored. The Surge battled hard against a high octane Pensacola offense, but any lingering Surge momentum was crushed when Pensacola forward Joe Caveney (Assist by Corey Banfield & Joshua Turnbull) scored his second goal of the game. Then to seal the deal, Adam Pawlick (Assist by Justin Alonzo & Keegan Flaherty) shot his second puck past Dan Clarke.
Peter Di Salvo picked up his 9th win of the season saving 35 of 37, while Surge goaltender Dan Clarke leaves Pensacola losing his 10th game of the year, saving 37 shots. Mississippi had four power plays on the night, scoring on two of them, while Pensacola had four power plays, capitalizing on one in the third period.
The Surge take the road after the tough loss, heading to Knoxville to face the IceBears.
