Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans announced today the signing of right-handed closer Nick Slack and versatile outfielder David Marks. Both players will report to training camp to compete for one of the twenty-two roster spots.

Nick Slack, 6'0 - 225, will add power and finesse to the Pelicans bullpen. Slack was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2003 and played in the Brewers system until 2006. He played for Brevard County in the high-A Florida State League in 2005 posting a 3-4 record with 46 strike outs, 14 walks, and five saves with a 7.9 strike outs per nine innings pitched ratio.

The Pine Ridge, FL resident graduated from Pine Ridge High School in 2001 and attended Lake City Community College until drafted in 2003.

"He performed well at the tryout," said Pelicans GM/Field Manager Talmadge "T" Nunnari. "He was throwing 88-91 mph with command and is another good player competing for a spring training spot."

David Marks, 6'0 - 190, joins the Pelicans after an impressive outing in the Florida Winter League. He played with the Lake County Black Bears and was a leader both on offense and defense. Marks led the team in doubles (5), triples (2), home runs (5), RBI (22), stolen bases (4), and slugging percentage (.678) through 15 games. He was also second on the team in hits (16) and runs (15) while committing only one error defensively.

Marks was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft. Pelicans player procurer James Gamble noticed his speed and the velocity of his arm. The left-hand hitting right-hander can play any position in the outfield.

"He will definitely be a competitor for a roster spot at camp," said GM/FM "T" Nunnari. "Obviously the Red Sox thought he had tools so we'll see if can acquiesce to our system."
