Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY- The Trenton Devils kept their season alive with a 3-2 overtime win over the Elmira Jackals tonight at First Arena. Trevor Kell netted the game winner 7:56 into the first overtime to bring the series to three games to two, Elmira. Game number six is set for 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night in Trenton.
The First Arena crowd was brought to volume a handful of times in the first period. Starting with a big Chaz Johnson hit. Next for a heavy weight bout between Myles Stoesz and Mike Sgroi. Sgroi took the card in the bout when he pulled the jersey over the head of Stoesz and landed a handful of uppercuts. The Jackals would rally around the Sgroi tilt and light the red lamp at the 12:08 mark. Steve Yetman moved the puck across the blue line and connected on a pass to Mike Sgroi. Sgroi then finished off the give and go play with a perfect one timer pass to Paul McIlveen who beat Jeff Frazee for his first goal of the post season. The Jackals closed out the first period with the 1-0 lead and a 9-4 shot advantage.
The second period was a different story the Devils scored the only goal and out shot the Jackals 11-3. 1:56 into the period Tony Zancanaro set up Jeff Prough for his first of the post season. The middle frame ended at 1-1.
The third period was full of highlights. The Jackals took a 2-1 advantage at the 4:22 mark on Chaz Johnsons first of the post season. Chris Korchinski moved the puck down to the corner to Pierre-Luc Faubert who sent a perfect one timer pass to Johnson who finished on the played. One minute seven seconds later the Devils would strike to tie the game at 2-2 with Dan Eves third goal of the post season. Deadlocked at two's the Jackals would be held in the game by a monster Michael Teslak save. Eric Castonguay put a break away move on the Elmira goalkeeper, only to have Teslak hold the pick at the goal line with the glove. Regulation came to a close and just like game one overtime was needed.
Unlike game one, the contest would be closed out in the first 10 minutes. The Jackals were awarded a four minute power play when Nathan Perkovich caught Travis Gawryletz in the mouth with a high stick. Trenton goalie Jeff Frazee made six saves on the Jackals power play. Moments after the overtime returned to five on five the Jackals were whistled for to many men on the ice. The Devils countered with a Trevor Kell game winner.
