Pels Trade To Add Power And Speed To Lineup

The Pensacola Pelicans announce a trade today with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association North Division. First baseman Javier Brito and infielder Alex Fonseca will bring some power and speed respectively to the Pelicans line-up this season. Right handed pitcher Hunter Davis will report to St. Paul to complete the trade.

Javier Brito, 6'2 - 230, brings power to the Pelicans lineup. Last year he played triple-A ball for the Cardinals in Memphis and in 13 games hit.283 with 13 hits, four RBI, and five runs. Brito also played with the Grand Prairie Air Hogs last year. Through 54 games he hit.316 with 67 hits, 12 home runs and 62 RBI. His slugging percentage was.590 in 2009 and.479 over his eight year career with an on base percentage of.373 last year and.396 over his career.

The Venezuelan native was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 25, 2002. He spent five years playing double-A and triple-A ball with Mobile, Tucson, West Tennessee, and Memphis before joining the Air Hogs. His career numbers include:.304 batting average, 659 hits, 143 doubles, eight triples, 73 home runs and 406 RBI. During the 2007 season with Mobile he ranked first in AVG (.327), second in walks (78), first in On-Base Pct. (.433), and third in Hits (144) in the Southern League.

Alex Fonseca, 5'10 - 170, is a right handed short stop from Tallahassee, FL and will bring some speed to the Pelicans lineup. Fonseca stole a career high 18 bases last season with the St. Paul Saints and is coming off his best season at the plate batting.292 with 57 hits, 30 runs, 22 RBI and 25 walks. His slugging and on base percentage were.385 and.376 respectively.

Fonseca has solid numbers over his four year career hitting.269 with 199 hits, 118 runs, 42 doubles, 3 triples, 12 home runs, 101 RBI, 111 walks and 60 stolen bases. Fonseca attended college at Florida Atlantic University and was selected to the First Team All Sun Belt Conference squad as a sophomore during 2004-2005. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim drafted Fonseca in the 36th round in 2006.

"I think it's a win for both organizations," said Pelicans GM/Field Manager Talmadge "T" Nunnari. "We can solidify up the middle with Fonseca and bring in additional power with Brito."

Davis, 6'2 - 185, was born in Hollywood, FL and was a closer for the Pelicans. Davis played for the Pelicans for two years after the Tampa Bay Rays signed and released him in 2007. His numbers last year include a 3-1-22 record with a 1.79 ERA in 40.1 innings pitched, 40 strike outs, 21 walks and a.176 avg. against.
