Pelicans to host CBL newcomer

May 22, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Pensacola (7-7) welcomes the El Paso Diablos (7-8) to Pensacola for the first time since they joined the Central League this year. Each team will be finishing their current series tonight.

El Paso formerly had an affiliated team with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Texas League (AA). El Paso's stadium, Cohen Stadium, seats 10,000 fans and is one of the newest and is the largest in all of Independent League baseball.

This will be the second meeting between these two teams this year. Last week, the Pelicans made the long bus trip to El Paso for a three game series in which the Diablos won two games.

In game one, the Pelicans came from five runs down to capture the victory. Trailing 8-3 heading into the 7th inning, the Pelicans bats came alive and pounded four runs in each the 7th and 8th innings. They added one more in the 9th to make the final score 12-10.

Game two was just the opposite. The Pelicans had the lead going into the 8th when the Diablos put a six spot on the board to win 7-4. In the rubber match, the Pelicans were never able to get things going as they lost 7-3.

In the series, Jose Salas hit .455 against El Paso pitchers that included five hits, one double and four RBI.

Four hitters on the El Paso team are among the league leaders. Jose Cano, Jorge Diaz, Carlos Sepulveda and Eric Gonzalez are all in the top 10 in batting average.
