Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Just because the Blues Brothers were at Pelican Park, the Pelicans were not blue at all as they got their bats going to win 9-1 tonight against the Edinburg Roadrunners. It was a tight ballgame until the Pelicans were able to score two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and four in the eighth adding up to their nine run total on the night.
Edinburg got on the board first in the first inning when Anthony Angel singled and would score on a bloop hit just over first base by Eddie Lara.
For the next four innings, it was all pitching and defense. Both starters kept the opposing hitters off the bases and away from the home making the score 1-0 in favor of Edinburg going into the bottom half of the sixth. That's when the Pelicans bats woke up.
Joe Espada singled with one out and would move to second on a sharp liner to third from Juan Rocha. Larry Bethea then hit a single to shallow right center that scored the tying run, Joe Espada. Now with two outs, Nestor Smith scored Rocha when he singled to right center making the score 2-1.
In the 7th, Mendoza led things off with a walk and would move to third when Jose Salas singled to right field, which was misplayed by outfielder Lara allowing Salas to go to second base. Trino Aguilar then hit a bouncer over shortstop that scored Mendoza nad pushing Salas to third. Bernard Caston then reached on a fielders choice when his second baseman Anthony Angel threw home unsuccessfully allowing Salas to score. Later in the inning, after batting around, Rocha singled to left field scoring Bernard Caston making the score 5-1 after seven innings.
Pensacola wasn't done heading into the 8th as they scored four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. George Branch and Smith had back to back singles and Mendoza then walked to load the bases. Salas then doubled down the left field line that scored Branch and Smith. Caston ripped a single up the middle that scored Mendoza and Salas to make the final score 9-1.
Pelicans starting pitcher, Gerardo Casadiego went seven innings giving up five hits, one run, struck-out eight and walked only four to improve his record to (2-3).
Bubba Dobson then came in to pitch the final two scoreless innings. He gave up zero hits and stuck-out two.
The same two teams face off tomorrow night at 6:05.
