Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pelicans countered Fort Worth's game one comeback with a comeback of their own, winning the second game of this best of five series 10-6 at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX to even the series at one game a piece.
In game one, Pensacola jumped out to a three run lead, 4-1, thanks to a four run fourth inning but could not hold off the Cats' hitters. Fort Worth scored eight unanswered runs making the score 8-4 and the Cats winning game 1.
Pensacola scored their runs thanks to an RBI single from Joe Espada and then a bases loaded base clearing double from Carlos Mendoza that scored Espada, Nestor Smith and Trino Aguilar.
Ryan Weems, starting pitcher for the Cats', pitched through several jams and finished the game, his second complete game of the season. Weems settled down after the fourth inning, finishing with 11 strikeouts, no walks and four runs on four hits.
Game two witnessed the Pelicans jumping out to an early lead once again and once again the Fort Worth Cats battling themselves back into the game.
By the third inning, Pensacola had a 6-0 lead but were tied at 6-6 in the 7th inning. In fear of falling behind 2-0 in the series, the Pelicans posted four runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory.
Rookie outfielder Palmer Karr hit a two-run homerun to give the Pelicans an 8-6 lead. They tacked on two more runs on an RBI triple by Rafael Alvarez, who also scored on the play after the relay throw got away. Karr was 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBI on the night.
Edwar Ramirez came on in relief to finish the game for Pensacola. Despite loading the bases in the ninth inning with Terrell Merriman at the plate, Ramirez struck out Merriman to end the game.
