Pelicans face off against division leaders

Going into Thursday's games the Pelicans trail the Coastal Bend Aviators by three and a half games in the American Association's Southern Division. This season the Pelicans are 2-5 against Coastal Bend but took two of three the last time the teams met. This will be the first time this season that the Aviators have traveled to Pelican Park.

The Pelicans comes into the series winners of five of their last ten games. Coastal Bend has won four of their last ten. Every team in the Southern Division is either 5-5 or 4-6 over the last ten games as the competition is really heating up as the team approaches Sunday, July 2nd, which will mark the end of the first half of the season.

Pensacola is currently tied with Coastal Bend for the best team batting average in the league as both teams are hitting .292. The Pelicans have three hitters ranked in the league's top ten including Ed Montague (.382) who leads the league and Trino Aguilar (.368) who is third.

The Pelicans have the second best team ERA in the league at 3.68 and they lead the league with 286 strikeouts, five shutouts, and 315 hits allowed. The Aviators are fourth in the league with a .420 team ERA.

WHO TO WATCH:

Pensacola: Ed Montague - LF - Is coming on as one of the best hitters in the league. He leads the American Association with a .382 average and has driven in 20 while scoring 24 times. Clint Sodowsky- SP - Is 5-1 in 2006 and leads the league with 56 strikeouts. He is also sixth in the league with his 2.54 ERA. He is 1-0 against Coastal Bend this season with a 1.72 ERA and 16 strikeouts.

Coastal Bend: Matt Creighton-2B- Is batting .309 in 2006 and is tied for his team lead with 27 RBI. He has nine doubles, two homeruns and a triple. He is hitting .357 over his last ten games. Pedro Flores-SP- Is 2-1 on the season and has a 3.33 ERA and 27 strikeouts. He has started two games against the Pelicans this season but has not gotten an decision. He has a 3.46 ERA against the Pels this season.
