South Georgia Peanuts News Release
For the first time this season the South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, lost a three-game series. The Aiken Foxhounds beat the Peanuts 13-7 to win the series two games to one. Shannon Wirth started for the Peanuts looking for his league-leading fifth win and was in line for the win when he came out of the ballgame.
The second inning was as crazy of an inning as the Peanuts have taken part in this season. Wirth labored through the top of the inning facing the entire Aiken lineup and allowing five runs on four hits. Down 5-0, South Georgia responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame. Ten batters came to the plate for the Peanuts and South Georgia was able to score six runs with three coming with two outs. Doc Brooks had two RBI wile Jon Zeringue, Nick Prosise, Brandon Woolard, Jasha Balcom, Joey Hooft and Steve Garrabrants all came around to score. Jesse Kraus, who came into the contest with a 0.64 ERA, did not even make it out of the second inning. South Georgia also added a run in the fourth.
Things seemingly began to settle down after the second inning came to an end. Shannon Wirth did not allow a run in the third, fourth or fifth innings. In the sixth, things got crazy once again. Wirth would only retire one batter before being removed from the sixth after walking two. Jason Blanton would come in for the Peanuts but four runs would score as the Foxhounds would take a 9-7 lead.
Things got a bit out of control for the Peanuts in the top of the ninth. Aiken scored four more runs and won the game by a score of 13-7.
Balcom was the only Peanut with multiple hits while also scoring two runs and driving one run in. Brooks had two RBI. Ja Jones had the best pitching performance for the Peanuts. He went two innings allowing two hits, no runs and two strikeouts.
The Peanuts hit the road for a three-game set at Macon before heading to Aiken to return the three-game series. Chris Howell will make his debut for the Peanuts Thursday night in Macon. First pitch is set for 7:05. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" and worldwide at www.southgeorgiapenauts.com.
