De Leon, Bascom Garner SCL Honors
June 6, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL) News Release
CONYERS, GA - With the first month of the 2007 season in the books, the South Coast League is pleased to announce that Aiken's Evandy De Leon and Bradenton's Tim Bascom have been named May's player and pitcher of the month.
De Leon, the Foxhounds leadoff hitter, has put a charge in Aiken's offensive production and played an important role in their 11-3 record during May. Evandy hit .308 for the Hounds, with 12 RBI's on 16 hits, including a league leading six homeruns. De Leon also made an impression on the base paths, scoring a league best 21 runs while adding 5 stolen bases.
Originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as an undrafted free agent in 2003, De Leon has spent parts of three seasons in affiliated baseball with the Tribe. In 2005, he led the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in home runs and was second on the team in RBIs (30), even though he appeared in only 45 games.
Bascom, the ace of Bradenton's staff, wowed scouts and fans early this year with a mid 90's fast ball. Virtually untouchable for the Juice, he posted a 0.00 ERA over 10 innings of work. Opponents hit a lowly .094 against him, including 11 strike outs.
A three-year starter at the University of Central Florida, Bascom compiled a 19-11 record with the Golden Knights and was a two time conference All-Star. Bascom was taken by the Padres in the 6th round of the 2006 amateur draft, but failed a physical, thus putting his big league dreams on hold. He is eligible to be drafted again later this week and hopes to make an impact in 2007 and beyond.
