Payne Scores Late, Still not Enough

Kalamazoo, MI- Jacob McDowell scored two goals, but they weren't enough for the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, as they lost their afternoon contest to the Port Huron Fighting Falcons by a final of 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon.

Fifteen minutes of scoreless hockey was played in the first period before the Jr. K-Wings got on the board for the first time on the afternoon. McDowell took a one-timer off the faceoff that was won cleanly by Taylor Burden. The McDowell goal was his fourth of the season, in just his third game back from a foot injury.

The second period was commanded by Port Huron from start to finish. Only 21 seconds into the period, the Fighting Falcons found the back of the net on a quick wrist shot from Mike Moroso (10th).

Six and a half minutes later, it would be the Fighting Falcons striking again. Max Reavis notched his eighth of the season on a second-chance rebound that he poked past Ken MacLean, making his first start since his three-game suspension.

At the 14:15 mark, Alex Globke forced a turnover in the offensive zone, and slid the puck to Kody Polin in the slot. Polin one-timed the puck into the back of the net for his team-leading fifteenth of the season.

The third period belonged to the Jr. K-wings and their comeback efforts. McDowell scored his second of the game and fifth of the season, when he jammed home a rebound on the doorstep to bring the game to within one.

With time ticking down and MacLean on the bench for an extra attacker, Kalamazoo would tie the game at 3 apiece. Chris Leone sent a wrist-shot on net, which took a favorable hop for the Jr. K-Wings. Robbie Payne saw it end up right on his stick, and slid it home from a sharp angle.

The Payne goal forced overtime, in which neither team scored. The game went to a five-man shootout. The first shooter for Port Huron was Nick Horne. His snapshot beat MacLean and found the back of the net. He was the only one of the ten shooters to score in the shootout. It stood as the game-winning goal.

Milosek made 50 saves on 53 shots to earn his eighth win of the season. MacLean took the loss (6-3-2) in his 38 save effort.

The Jr. K-Wings will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West again on Sunday, November 27th against the Port Huron Fighting Falcons.
