Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats put on an entertaining show both on and off the ice in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Prince Albert Raiders 5-2 in front of over 4,000 fans at the Brandt Centre.

The depth was evident up front in this one, with the line of Cole Carrier, Sloan Stanick and Zack Smith delivering two even-strength goals, plus Stanick notched one on the power play. Zack Stringer also had a power play goal and Connor Bedard had a late goal on a diving backhand to make it a 5-2 final.

The Pats outshot the Raiders 34-21 in the game, with Matthew Kieper picking up wins in consecutive starts. Ozzy Wiesblatt debuted for the Raiders after coming back from San Jose Sharks camp and had a goal in the first period.

GAME SUMMARY

Sloan Stanick opened the scoring for the Pats on a power play just over five minutes into the game to get the crowd energized and into the contest.

Just past the hallway point of the period, the Raiders evened the score on a power play of their own, thanks to a strong shot from Ozzy Wiesblatt.

After one period of play, the score was knotted at one apiece, with the shots favouring the Pats 10-7.

Cole Carrier got Regina back in front just under eight minutes into the second period with a slick backhander that went right upstairs.

Once again, the visitors responded a few minutes later, this time off the stick of Reece Vitelli on a 2-on-1 rush.

It only took the Pats 1:16 to respond this time, following a pretty passing play between Carrier, Stanislav Svozil and Stanick, which gave Stanick a tap in to a wide open net to make the score 3-2.

The Regiment took the 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

Just 43 seconds into period number three, Ryker Evans got a point shot through to the net on a power play that deflected off Stringer and past goaltender Carter Serhyenko, making it a 2-goal Pats advantage.

The Raiders didn't have much to show after that goal, as they only mustered seven shots in the third period.

Before the matinee was complete, Bedard made it clear he wanted in on the action too, as he scored a fantastic diving goal with under seven minutes remaining to put the game to bed at 5-2.

Regina went 2-for-4 on the power play in this one and a strong 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.
