Patriots Win Pitchers' Duel 4-2 Over Camden

CAMDEN , NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Camden Riversharks 4-2 in front of 7,117 fans at Campbell 's Field on Friday evening.

The Patriots broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead when second baseman Matt Hagen lined a one out single to left, moved into scoring position on an infield single to the left side by third baseman Jeff Nettles and scored on a two RBI single to right center by catcher Jason Belcher.

Somerset added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to extend their lead to 4-2 when right fielder Mike Rodriguez drew a two out walk, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single to center by designated hitter Josh Pressley.

The Riversharks struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 when centerfielder Wayne Lydon led off with a single to right, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by rightfielder Chris Walker and scored on a one out RBI single to left by leftfielder Jon Knott.

The Patriots tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the top of the third inning when leftfielder Elliott Ayala reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to short, advanced into scoring position on a Riversharks' throwing error and scored on a Riversharks' fielding error on a ground ball hit back to the mound by Rodriguez.

Camden answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead when Knott hit a one out solo home run (1) to left center.

Somerset tied the game at 2-2 with another unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. The Patriots loaded the bases on a one out single to left center by Nettles, a two out single up the middle by Belcher and a Riversharks' fielding error on a ground ball to second by first baseman Joe Burke. Ayala would then draw a bases loaded walk to force in Nettles to tie the game.

Patriots' starter Josh Miller (6-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one in seven innings of work. Riversharks' reliever Julio Guerrero (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing one run on four hits while walking none and striking out one in two innings pitched. Patriots' closer Travis Minix pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 12th save of the season.

With the win the Patriots improved to 31-16 on the 2009 season while the Riversharks dropped to 23-24.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, June 15th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Long Island Ducks.
