Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 3-1 before 6,993 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
The Patriots struck first in the second inning for a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by third baseman Jeff Nettles (1).
Somerset added a pair of runs in the third inning for a 3-0 advantage. Center fielder Jeremy Owens and second baseman Emiliano Escandon both reached on singles. Designated hitter Kevin Nicholson drove in Owens with an RBI single and Escandon scored on an error on the same play.
Newark put up a run in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Designated hitter Melvin Falu singled and scored on an error following left fielder Jose Herrera's single.
Somerset starting pitcher Scott Sobkowiak (1-0) earned the victory, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four batters. Bears starting pitcher Greg Bauer (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings pitched while striking out three. Patriots reliever Robert Marquez earned the save (1), pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Thursday evening with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears. The game is Nurses Appreciation Night.
