Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT â On a gorgeous day at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, the Bridgeport Bluefish used two big innings to hold off the Nashua Pride, 9-4, at Wednesday morning's Education Day.
Thousands of students filled the stands and ran wild around the concourse as the Bluefish (8-5) ran wild around the bases led by right fielder Jamie Gann, who finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored. After the game, Gann reflected on the difference between Tuesday night's error-filled loss and today's win.
"That's just baseball," Gann said. "You're going to have errors. You just have to put it behind you and focus on the next game. We're a good team. We're not going to panic."
Shortstop Corey Hart continued his consistency at the plate going 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Left fielder Michael Coleman also collected two hits, scored two runs and knocked in a run.
Lefty Angel Miranda (1-0) got the win for the Bluefish after coming in for fellow lefty Josh Kalinowski in the fifth. Miranda pitched two innings, giving up one run on three hits. Kalinowski gave up two runs on five hits and struck out four through four innings and was a bit disappointed in his performance.
"I felt good out there, but I reached my pitch count and got taken out early," Kalinowski said. "That fourth inning, I had that walk and then gave up a few base hits. It was disappointing because the team played so well, and you'd always like to be out there as long as you can."
Right-hander Denny Harriger (1-1) got the loss for the Pride (6-5), giving up six runs on six hits â four runs in the fifth inning â through 4 2/3 innings.
The Bluefish posted four runs in the fifth to pop the game wide open. Leadoff man Rolo Avila hit a solo shot over to left field, posting his second homer of the season. After a double by Hart and two walks, Gann hit an RBI-double which was followed by first baseman DJ Boston's 2-RBI double. The Bluefish added three more in the seventh when Gann belted a 3-run home run over the left field wall.
Nashua designated hitter Glenn Murray waited until the ninth inning to get a hit, going 1-for-4 and extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Pride second baseman Joe Kilburg went 3-for-3 on the game with a double, and first baseman Brian Becker belted his third home run of the season, going 2-for-4 from the plate.
Kalinowski threw the first pitch of the game at 10:35 a.m. as the Bluefish put on their first of three Education Days for the 2005 season. Elementary and middle school students from all across the area came to the game and were handed curriculum packets, integrating baseball with subjects like math, reading, history and geography. The next two Education Days will be held Thursday, May 26 and Wednesday, June 1, each at 10:35 a.m.
The Bluefish will try and extend their lead to two games over the Pride for first place in the Atlantic League North Division in a 7:05 p.m. game Thursday night with `Fish right-hander Josh Miller (1-1) going up against Pride lefty Mark LaRosa (0-1).
