FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., November 6, 2002 – There are 15 players in the Fayetteville Patriots training camp after the Patriots coaching staff released six players on Wednesday.

Among the cuts was Bayonne Taty, a 6-foot-10 forward who finished the 2001-2002 season with the Patriots. Taty averaged 1.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game last season. The Patriots took Taty in the 11th round of the 2002 NBDL Draft on Thursday.

Three of the Patriots allocated players -- Justin Gainey, Kenyatta Brown and Jamaal Young – were e also let go on Wednesday. Six-foot-six guard Alpha Bangura and 6-9 forward Marlon Dumont were other two Patriots cuts.

Gainey, a 6-foot point guard, played at N.C. State from 1996-2000. He left the Wolfpack ninth all-time in assists with 344.

Brown, a rookie out of Brooklyn, N.Y., played at East Carolina. He ended his East Carolina career as one of only 19 Pirates to play more than 100 games. Brown is 10th in school history in 3-point field goals made with 89 and ranks 11th in steals with 80. As a senior last season, Brown averaged 11.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and made 49 3-pointers.

Young, who is also a rookie out of Brooklyn, played at Johnson C. Smith under coach Steve Joyner and helped the Golden Bulls win a CIAA championship in 2001.

Bangura played at St. John's from 2000-2002 and averaged 6.0 points per game before turning pro after his junior season. Bangura, a 6-6 forward, was a ninth-round pick of the Patriots on Thursday. Dumont went in the fifth round to Fayetteville. He played at Texas Christian and averaged 8.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game as a senior.

After the draft on Oct. 31, the Patriots expected to have twenty-five players in training camp this week. But before guard Devin Brown could make it to Fayetteville, the San Antonio Spurs made him a call up.

Fayetteville Patriots coach Jeff Capel then had to release three injured players in Earl Ike, Bobby Smith and Kenny Dye. The Patriots must be down to 10 players by Nov. 14. The Patriots open the season at home against the Asheville Altitude on Nov. 15. The game will be televised by ESPN2.

Single-game tickets range from $6-$21. The Patriots will travel to Mobile to play the Revelers on Friday in a preseason game. They will return to play the North Charleston Lowgators on Nov. 12 at the Crown Coliseum, starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
