Parkhurst earns international call-up to U.S. Men's National Team
January 24, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS - The Columbus Crew announced today that defender Michael Parkhurst has been called-up for United States Men's National Team duty ahead of the team's upcoming international friendly and first match of 2014. Under Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann, the United States will finish its January training camp in Los Angeles as the Stars and Stripes face Korea Republic on Saturday, February 1 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Following the match, Parkhurst is set to join the Crew for the club's 2014 preseason camp. The Black & Gold acquired the rights to the defender on January 13, 2014 following a trade with the New England Revolution. Major League Soccer's 2007 Defender of the Year returned to the League in 2014 following stints in the German Bundesliga and the Danish Superliga. Parkhurst played his first four seasons (2005-2008) with the Revs and was the 2005 MLS Rookie of the Year.
Parkhurst, who turned 30 years old today, has represented the United States internationally on the senior roster since 2007 and has earned 23 caps. His National Team debut came in a CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Trinidad & Tobago on June 9, 2007. Parkhurst was a member of the squad that took home the 2007 and 2013 Gold Cup titles as well as the side that finished runner-up in the 2009 tournament. He also laced-up for the U.S. Olympic Team in the group stage during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Kickoff at StubHub Center on February 2 is set for 2:00 p.m. PT, and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, WatchESPN and UniMas. Fans can also follow the match live on Twitter @ussoccer.
The Crew begins the 2014 season at D.C. United on Saturday, March 8. Players reported for preseason camp today ahead of two separate training trips to Florida with a week of training back in Columbus in between.
