Palm Beach Completes Series Sweep over St. Lucie
June 26, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The Palm Beach Cardinals bowtied a six-game series sweep over the St. Lucie Mets with a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
The Cardinals' outscored the Mets 33-25 over the course of the weeklong set in Jupiter, with one-run victories on Tuesday and Saturday. While Palm Beach needed a walk-off home run from Darlin Moquete to win on Saturday, the Beach Birds rode four single-run frames during the Sunday matinee to some breathing room and a 3-0 record in the Florida State League's second half standings. Dating back to the previous series against the Mets, the Cardinals have won eight in succession against their Treasure Coast foes.
Winners of 12 of their past 15 total matchups, Palm Beach is now just one game below .500 in 2022 after being 14-27 as recently as May 25.
Left-handed pitcher Alex Cornwell bookended the series sweep with a pair of gems. Allowing just one run in a five-inning no-decision on Tuesday night, the University of Southern California product tossed seven innings on Sunday, surrendering just a single run once again, while striking out eight Mets and collecting a win. Nelfri Contreras and Roy Garcia both pitched innings out of the bullpen in the series finale, while keeping St. Lucie off the scoreboard. Garcia's ninth inning gave the righty his fourth save of the season.
Offensively, both ends of the lineup contributed the Cardinals' win, with second baseman Darlin Moquete and shortstop Sander Mora (the top two batters in the order) each going 2-5. Adanson Cruz meanwhile, who was penciled in ninth in the lineup, provided a 3-3 day which included a walk.
Mora's RBI double in the third brought in Moquete to open the scoring. The shortstop collected his second RBI in the fifth, while his fellow middle infielder had his first RBI of the game an inning later. Jhon Torres would make it 4-1 in the seventh on a single that scored Brady Whalen.
The Florida State League's hottest team will take Monday off before heading into a six-game home series against the Daytona Tortugas. First pitch Tuesday night is slated for 6:30 p.m.
