Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â The Charleston Swamp Foxes today announced the assignment of a pair of former University of South Carolina products from the arenafootball2 league office. Linemen Preston Vinson and Larrell Johnson have been assigned to the Foxes for the rapidly approaching 2003 season.
Vinson, a 6-3, 270-pound offensive and defensive lineman, has spent the past three seasons with the Swamp Foxes organization. He has been reassigned to Charleston after off-season tryouts with the Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League team.
Vinson returns as the Swamp Foxes' career sack leader, having hauled down opposing quarterbacks 21 times over the past three years. He also holds the team tackles for loss record with 17.5 TFL's and ranks fourth on the all-time total career tackles list with 83.5 stops.
Last season, Vinson set the team single-season sack record, tallying 10.5 in 15 games. He recorded three sacks in two separate games, both team records. He also registered two safeties in the season-opening win over Greensboro last April, which helped him earn him af2 ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors. Vinson was also crucial in the upset wins of Richmond and Augusta in 2003.
Johnson is a 6-2, 320-pound lineman who was recruited to the University of South Carolina as a defensive tackle. He started his freshman year at that position, recording 15 tackles before moving to offense as a center. He started in three-consecutive seasons at the center position, playing in a pair of Outback Bowls for the Gamecocks.
Johnson was named All-Southeastern Conference in both 2000 and 2001 for the âCocks.
"Having Preston Vinson and Larrell Johnson on board is huge for this team," said head coach Rik Richards. "They are both tremendous athletes who have ties to the local community since they played collegiate ball at South Carolina. Vinson has proven himself on the field here and he looks better than ever heading into this season. Johnson is a big athlete at 6-2, 320-lbs. and as a true center, he'll be very beneficial to this squad. His experience on both sides of the ball bodes well for the Arena game."
Season tickets for 2003 year, which starts on April 5 are on sale now. For more information, please contact the Swamp Foxes' office at (843) 554-4321.
