Pair of Bruins to Play for Sweets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Walla Walla Sweets roster for the 2013 season of West Coast League baseball continues to grow as the team announced this week the signing of two players from University of California, Los Angeles. UCLA freshman Cody Poteet and UCLA commit, high school senior Luke Persico, will both head to Walla Walla for the summer.

Cody Poteet, a right-handed pitcher for the Bruins, is a native of Bonita, Calif. and a graduate of Christian High School. The 6-foot 1-inch, 190-pound righty was a three-year varsity letter winner in baseball and as a junior batted .509 with 13 doubles, 23 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. Following his strong junior season, Poteet earned first-team All-East County and first-team All-Eastern League honors. In 2011 he also played in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. As a freshman in high school, Poteet was 9-1 with a 1.56 ERA, notching 78 strikeouts and issuing just 32 walks. Poteet will play his first season of college baseball this year at UCLA under head coach John Savage.

"Cody is a solid right-handed pitcher who is part of a strong program," said Sweets' general manager Zachary Fraser. "We have a great relationship with Coach Savage and we're thrilled that he is sending us two talented players."

Luke Persico, a senior at Great Oak High School in Temecula, Calif. is a 6-foot 3-inch, 175-pound, outfielder who has committed to play at UCLA after graduation. Before transferring to Great Oak, Persico played for three seasons at Hart High School in Newhall, Calif. As a junior at Hart, Persico hit .267 with 12 RBI, three home runs, and 18 stolen bases in 86 at-bats. As a sophomore he had 17 RBI, five doubles, one triple, and one home run and hit .395 in 99 plate appearances. A native of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., Persico is a two-time All-Foothill League selection and in 2012 he competed for the Milwaukee Brewers at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif.

"Luke has had a great high school career and is headed to one of the best collegiate programs in the country," said Sweets' manager J.C. Biagi. "He's a good outfielder that can really run and will add depth to the solid group of outfielders we're bringing in."

UCLA will open the college season on February 15 with a three-game series against Minnesota. The Sweets will begin their fourth season of WCL baseball on June 5 at 7:05 P.M., with Opening Day presented by Northwestern Mutual. Season tickets and ticket packages are on sale now.
