Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Teagan Damme isn't afraid of hockey pucks. When he's on the ice in his goalie gear, he is ready for whatever his teammates send his way during practice, and he can face the toughest shots from opponents during Waterloo Junior Hawks games. However, no third grader should have to face what Teagan and his family are currently up against.

The Dammes recently learned that Teagan has Adrenoleukodystrophy. Known as ALD, Mayo Clinic describes the disorder as "a type of hereditary condition that damages the membrane that insulates nerve cells in your brain." ALD includes a host of potentially debilitating symptoms affecting movement, vision, hearing, and can lead to seizures and dementia. Treatment includes chemo and gene therapy, and potentially bone marrow transplants.

There is no cure.

On Friday, February 9th at Young Arena, Waterloo hockey fans are encouraged to "Pack the House for Teagan Damme" during the Black Hawks' 7:05 p.m. game against the Green Bay Gamblers. Discounted $12 tickets are available, with half of each ticket purchased contributed to Teagan's medical needs when using the code TEAGANSTRONG at tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.

"This is an awful situation; it's not something anyone can make go away, but we can be here for Teagan and the Damme family," said Black Hawks President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Greene. "I hope we will see 3,000 fans wearing blue [one of the colors associated with ALD awareness] and that people will check out BeTheMatch.org to find out whether they can help Teagan and other patients through a bone marrow donation."

Before and during the February 9th game, Teagan will have several opportunities to interact with the Black Hawks' players and coaches behind the scenes.

The family is being embraced by the entire Waterloo hockey community. This evening (February 1st), the Waterloo Warriors high school team will collect donations and fundraise for the Dammes during a Midwest High School Hockey League game at Young Arena. The Warriors play their counterparts from Cedar Rapids, with the varsity matchup beginning at approximately 8 p.m.
