San Rafael Pacifics News Release

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs - a new independent professional baseball league based in California and Hawaii, and the Freedom Pro Baseball League based in Arizona have announced plans to begin inter-league play in 2013.

"Each league is in the emerging stages of development, with highly capable professional leadership," said Joe Sperle, Founder and President of the Freedom Pro Baseball League. "This is a unique opportunity for both leagues to better get to know one another as we explore a more integrated relationship going forward."

The leagues are in active discussions about a possible merger of the Freedom League's Arizona-based teams: the Cooper State Prospectors, the Arizona Centennials, the Montezuma Federals and the Sonoran Explorers and the Pacific Association's four teams: the San Rafael Pacifics, the Maui Na Koa Ikaika, the Hilo Stars and the Sonoma Grapes.

Both leagues have announced plans to expand to include additional teams over the next year.

"I couldn't be happier about this first step between our leagues," said Eugene Lupario, Managing Principal Owner of the San Rafael Pacifics and Sonoma Grapes. "We've seen a lot of instability over the recent years with independent leagues on the West Coast. This proposed concept of a merged Freedom League and Pacific Association makes a lot of sense toward assuring long-term stability."

The leagues are working on their schedules that will be set for release in January. The teams from each league will play one another in "home and home" series that will count in each league's standings.

In addition, the leagues have announced that they will jointly cooperate in the operation of the Freedom Winter League scheduled for play between February 13, 2013 and March 13, 2013 in Phoenix. The Freedom Winter League offers prospective ballplayers an opportunity to be signed to pro contracts, and in particular, the Grapes and several of the Freedom League teams will be actively seeking players to fill their rosters. All Major League Baseball teams and independent leagues have been invited to send scouts.
