P-RAYS YOUTH CLINIC ON SATURDAY, JULY 2: Registration will be accepted right up to the start of the P-Rays ninth annual youth baseball clinic on Saturday, July 2 at 9:30 a.m. at Princeton's Hunnicutt Field. The clinic is open to boys and girls from ages 7-15. Instructors for the 3 ½ hour clinic will be P-Rays' manager Jamie Nelson, pitching coach Rafael Montalvo, hitting coach Manny Castillo, and several of the team's players. Participants will receive a clinic t-shirt (sponsored by Newberry Ford and the Lewis Agency), a Rays bat bag, and a major league candy dispenser. Cost of the clinic is $25.00 per person. It is recommended that participants be on site no later than 9:00 a.m. to check in so the clinic can begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. For more information, you may contact the P-Rays either by e-mail at raysball@sunlitsurf.com or by telephone at (304) 487-2000.
P-RAYS BOOSTER CLUB HOT DOG SALE ON SATURDAY, JULY 2: In conjunction with the youth baseball clinic, the Princeton Devil Rays Booster Club will be conducting a hot dog sale in the concession stand area at Hunnicutt Field from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. You are invited to dine right at the field (tables and chairs will be set up), pick up "to-go" orders, or call in at (304) 487-2000 and have your hot dogs delivered right to your door! Make your Saturday lunch a "hot dog day" (there will also be sodas and assorted baked goods available for purchase) for you and know that you are helping the Princeton Devil Rays Booster Club, who will use the money collected for projects directed solely toward outings, social events, and items needed by our players to make them feel even more comfortable in their summer "home away from home." For more information or for Saturday call-in orders, please contact the P-Rays front office at (304) 487-2000.
PLAYERS TO APPEAR: Several members of the 2005 Princeton Devil Rays will be on hand to sign autographs and meet the public from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at the Goody's store (close to WalMart) in Princeton's East River Shopping Plaza as part of a fund-raising event for the Children's Miracle Network. There will be baseballs (for use for player autographs) available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds off each baseball sold to be donated to the Children's Miracle Network.
OUR FIRST TEXAS RANGER: You can now add the Texas Rangers to the list of teams who have had a former Princeton player don their major league uniform at some time or another. Making a brief appearance for the team from Arlington was pitcher Jason Standridge (1998 P-Ray), who was called up to the big club from June 17-24.
SETH'S BIG ADVENTURE: Pitcher Seth McClung (1999 P-Ray) stamped a big exclamation point on his journey back from "Tommy John" surgery with a quality start for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field versus the Florida Marlins on June 26. Seth, who just rejoined the big club from AAA Durham, limited the Marlins to one run on two hits with five strikeouts in an outstanding 111 pitch effort over seven innings. The run allowed was all of the scoring in the 1-0 Marlins' victory but it was a major step for McClung in his quest to make the major leagues his permanent address once again.
LEAGUE LEADERS: The season as of this writing is only seven games old but we will update you on P-Rays who are among the Appalachian League leaders. The P-Rays are tied for first place in the Appalachian League's Eastern Division with the Danville Braves, both with 5-2 records. In league statistics for the first six games of the season, the P-Rays' Jairo Delarosa is currently first in the league in hitting with a .478 average while Tommy Lagried holds down the fifth spot with a .412 mark. In pitching, Jarrod Farrell has the most innings pitched in the league while retaining a spotless 0.00 earned run average to lead the league in this category. Mike Wlodarczyk is ninth in the league with a 1.29 ERA. Outfielder John Matulia is tied for first in the circuit in stolen bases with four. Relief pitcher Robert Findlay is tied for first in the league in appearances and tied for second in the league in saves. Pitcher Greg Dupas is currently second in the league in innings pitched.
Offensively as a team, Princeton is fourth in the league with a .274 batting average while being aggressive on the basepaths and leading the league in stolen bases with 10. On the pitching side of things, the P-Rays staff is second in the league with a team earned run average of 2.93.
DON'T FORGET TO LISTEN: Remember, you can bring the P-Rays' away games right into your living room by listening to the games either by radio at WAEY-1490AM or on the Internet at either www.star95.com or www.princetondevilrays.com for all the action! The broadcasts, featuring P-Rays' play-by-play man Jarrod Talbott, start ten minutes prior to the game with his pre-game show, "The On Deck Circle." Also, do not forget that you can have Jarrod investigate questions you may have about the team by e-mailing him at rays@star95.com and he will try to get your question (and the ensuing answer) read over the airwaves. The key series at Danville between the P-Rays and the Braves on June 27-29 will continue on the air each night at 6:50 p.m.
BUS TRIP TO GREENEVILLE: The P-Rays tenth annual Fans' Appalachian League Bus Trip will be on Saturday, July 30 to see the P-Rays battle the Greeneville Astros in Greeneville, TN. Cost of the trip will be $25.00 per person and the price includes your game ticket and all transportation costs. Sign up now and get your seat on the bus. The bus will depart the Hunnicutt Field parking area in front of the main ticket office at 2:30 p.m. (there will be one rest stop enroute to Greeneville) and return to Princeton immediately following the game. For more information, please contact the P-Rays front office either by e-mail at raysball@sunlitsurf.com or by telephone at (304) 487-2000.
P-RAYS PULL INTO FIRST PLACE TIE: With a 2-0 shutout of the Danville Braves on June 27 at Danville, the P-Rays have pulled into a tie for first place in the Appalachian League's Eastern Division with a 5-2 record. The D-Braves came into the game with a .319 team batting average and having scored 15 runs apiece at Bluefield against the Orioles on the two previous nights.
We remind you once again that it is indeed fun to be a fan here in P-Rays land!!!! So let's pack the ballpark when the P-Rays return home on June 30-July 3 as we welcome our boys home for the beginning of the annual Mercer Cup series with the Bluefield Orioles. Keep thinking P-Rays baseball because after all our 2005 slogan is:
"Our Focus...Your Summer!"
