Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws re-wrote the record books in their series opener against visiting Long Beach Armada Monday night at Nettleton Stadium...Chico handed the Armada a 21-10 defeat, breaking a series of team records and establishing a new Golden Baseball League high for runs in a single game.

While Chico pounded out a 11 hits on the night, they were aided by three Long Beach errors, four hit batters and an astonishing 19 walks issued by Armada pitchers. The Outlaws grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning when Desi Wilson and Mike Mallory scored on a two-out double by Craig Kuzmic...but in the 2nd Long Beach knotted up the contest when Samone Peters blasted a two-run homer to dead center off Chico starting pitcher Alex Perez. The Outlaws answered by sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the 2nd, combining three singles, two doubles, a triple, three walks and a hit batter to push across six runs and go up by a score of 8-2.

Chico upped its advantage to 10-2 in the 4th inning, scoring a pair of runs without the benefit on a hit (a walk, two hit batters, a fielder's choice grounder and a throwing error). Long Beach tried to climb back into the contest in the top of the 6th - Randall Shelley's three-run bomb off Perez made it a 10-5 ballgame. But the roof caved in for the Armada in the bottom of the 6th when the Outlaws sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 10 times in the frame to put the game out of reach. Chico needed only three hits in the inning - Long Beach relievers Andre Simpson and Alan Newman combined to hit a batter and walk eight others. Newman - a former major leaguer - issued five bases-loaded walks (four in succession) and hit a batter with the bases to give Chico a 20-5 lead. The Armada got to Outlaws reliever Adam Gold for five runs in the 8th inning, but in the bottom of the 8th Chico completed the scoring on an RBI single by Steve Booker. Outlaws reliever Kevin Beavers retired Long Beach in order in the 9th to lock down Chico's bizarre series-opening victory.

Perez (1-0) went six innings to pick up the win for the Outlaws (now 3-2 on the year); Long Beach starter Paul Buchan, who failed to survive the 2nd inning, took the loss (the Armada's season record falling to 1-3). Kuzmic finished the night with two hits and five runs batted in...Alex Froloff had a single and a triple en route to a three RBI night...and both Booker and Bobby Gandolfo chipped in with two hits and two RBI. Long Beach had eight hits on the night - Peters, Ryan Webb and Adonis Harrison collecting two apiece. Game two of the series is set for Tuesday night, with the Outlaws sending right-hander Nick Singleton (1-0) to the mound...the Armada will counter with right-hander Nate Pudewell (0-0). Game time is 7:05pm at Nettleton Stadium.
