2006 Season Underway

June 6, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release

The second season of the GBL opened with a bang in Yuma, Chico, and Reno over the weekend as more than 22,000 fans poured through the gates.

Yuma started it off on Thursday night with over 4,100 fans on opening night on hand to watch the Scorpions defeat the defending champion San Diego Surf Dawgs 8-7. The Surf Dawgs fought back the next night, Military Tribute Night in Yuma, to even the series as they pounded out a 7-3 win. The two clubs then traded victories on Saturday and Sunday as the Scorpions won 12-5 on the first Fireworks Night while San Diego prevailed in the final game of the series 8-3.

In Chico, the Friday night opener featured GBL part-owner Pat Sajak on hand to throw out the first pitch and a post-game fireworks show as the Outlaws destroyed the Fullerton Flyers 7-2 in front of over 3200 fans. Saturday saw the Flyers bounce back as they held off a furious 6-run rally by Chico in the 9th inning to prevail by a score of 8-7. The two teams split a doubleheader on Sunday with Chico winning the first game 5-3 and Fullerton taking the nightcap 10-1.

In Reno, professional baseball returned after a seven year absence as the Silver Sox opened with a loss to the Long Beach Aramada 9-6 in front of more than 2300 fans at Peccole Park at the University of Nevada Reno. Pat Sajak arrived on Saturday and proved to be a good luck charm as the Silver Sox led the entire way behind a home run by catcher Marcus Jensen and 6 innings of one-run pitching by Ben Thurmond. The deciding match of the three game series, on Sunday afternoon, was the most dramatic as a bases clearing double by Marcus Jensen brought Reno from behind late in the game to win 5-3.

Stay tuned for details on last night's Opener in San Diego. And join us on Monday in Long Beach and Wednesday in Fullerton as the Opening Festivities conclude!
