Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws scored in only two innings Wednesday, but they scored in bunches - a six-run 4th and a three-run 6th provided the necessary offense to defeat Calgary 9-7 in front of nearly 1,700 at Nettleton Stadium...the Outlaws putting an end to their three-game losing streak and knotting up the series with the Vipers at one win apiece.

It took Calgary just three batters and three minutes to score in the top of the 1st inning - Jorge Mejia led off the game with a double off Outlaws starter Greg Bicknell, was sacrificed to third and came home on Drew Miller's single to center. While Vipers starting pitcher Nate Melek set down the first nine batters he faced, Calgary extended their lead with three in the 4th - a two-run homer by Jose Morban and an RBI single by Jorge Tang made the score 4-0. But in the bottom of the 4th Chico finally got to Melek, batting around to take the lead - three straight singles by Steve Boggs, Eric Pringle and Casey Garrison produced the first Outlaws run...Julian Benavidez was walked with the bases loaded to force home Pringle...and then Lino Garcia lined a grand slam over the right field wall to put Chico on top 6-4.

The Vipers came back to tie the game in the 6th - Felix Jose led off the inning with a homer to right...then Travis Drader reached on an error and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by Tang. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 7th when the Outlaws went back on top to stay - with Robert Coello on in relief for Calgary, Gabe Riley walked, stole second and was balked to third...after Matt Ceriani walked to put runners at the corners, Boggs doubled to center to knock in Riley...then Pringle followed with a line single to left to drive home a pair to make the score 9-6. The Vipers plated a run in the 8th when Arlis scored from third on a wild pitch by Outlaws reliever Rob Ellis, but closer Todd Gelatka came on in the 9th to retire Calgary in order to lock down the win for Chico.

Ellis (2-0) got credit for the win, with Gelatka earning his third save of the year...Coello (1-1) was tagged for the loss. Boggs and Pringle each had two hits to lead the Outlaws offense; Miller and Arlis each had two hits to pace Calgary. Wednesday's win improves Chico's season record to 7-14 on the year...the Vipers slip to 14-7 for the season. The series rubber match is slated for Thursday, with the Outlaws sending left-hander Jason Roach (0-4) to the mound against Calgary's ace righthander Evan Greusel (3-0). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
