Outlaws urge local youth to "hit the books"
April 14, 2005 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CALIF â The Chico Outlaws are busy getting ready for their inaugural 2005 season, but the Golden Baseball League franchise is also taking time to promote the fun of reading to area youth. Through May 13, the Outlaws are visiting elementary schools in the Chico Unified School District and surrounding communities with "Rascal's Reading Round-up." The program, presented by Butte Community Bank, will offer boys and girls the chance to earn free tickets to Outlaws home games.
"Developing a love for reading â especially at a young age â has never been more important," Outlaws public relations director Rory Miller said Thursday on the eve of the team's school tour. "Our reading program and free tickets incentive is a fun way to get kids excited about the fine art of page-turning...and learning all sorts of new and different things in the process."
Outlaws staff and Rascal the Raccoon, the team's official mascot, will drop by classrooms at 15 elementary schools over the next three weeks to entertain youngsters with talk about baseball and the upcoming Outlaws season. The main thrust, though, is to stress the importance of reading in the children's lives. The visits will culminate with the Outlaws conducting a classroom reading session, with Rascal handing out gifts provided by Butte Community Bank, the Chico Enterprise-Record, J&R Sportscards of Chico, Pepsi Bottling Group of Durham and KCVU-TV Fox 30. Every child in each elementary school visited will be offered the opportunity to earn two free tickets to an Outlaws game by reading two teacher-approved books.
"The district office and the individual schools are extremely enthusiastic about Rascal's Reading Round-up," Miller said. "Having people from the community come into the classroom and reinforce what the instructor teaches every day definitely has an impact on kids. The fact that we wrap our âreading is fun' message in a fun baseball context really drives the point home." For additional information on Rascal's Reading Round-up, call the Outlaws office at 345-3210.
