Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws may want to think about hanging on to their special pink jersey tops - on a night when the team promoted breast cancer awareness, the Outlaws pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Long Beach errors to beat the Armada 13-9 Friday in front of over 4,200 at Nettleton Stadium...the win putting an end to Chico's four-game losing streak.
The Outlaws jumped on Armada starting pitcher Dustin Gober in the 1st inning - Jesse Kovacs scored from third on a wild pitch and Todd Gossage doubled home Jose Valdez to put Chico on top 2-0. It stayed that way until the 4th when Long Beach combined two walks, three Outlaws errors and an RBI double by Stephen Yoo to go up 3-2. Chico tied things up in the bottom of the 4th when Gossage led off the inning with a triple and came home on a double-play grounder...then in the 5th the Outlaws took the lead for good, scoring four times courtesy of three straight two-out hits - Julian Benavidez singled home Steve Boggs to put Chico back in front...Gossage followed by knocking in Valdez with a double...and Lino Garcia's two-bagger off the center field wall plated Benavidez and Gossage to make the score 7-3.
Long Beach sliced the Outlaws lead in half in the 7th, utilizing two more Chico errors to score twice off reliever Derrick Landavazo...but in the bottom of the 7th the Outlaws took control of the contest, batting around and scoring five times off Armada reliever Andrew Layfield - Valdez led off the frame with his third home run of the year...Casey Garrison singled home a pair...and Bryan Springman bombed a two-run double to right to give Chico a 12-5 lead. In the 8th four consecutive singles produced another Outlaws run (Garcia knocking in Valdez) to make the score 13-5...then Todd Gelatka came out of the Chico bullpen to get the final three outs. Long Beach scored four times in the 9th on a Dave Parrish solo homer and a three-run blast by Norm Hutchins...but Gelatka got Octavio Martinez to pop up and struck out Yoo looking to end it and give the Outlaws the series opening win.
Derrick Loop (2-0) started for Chico and went five innings, allowing no earned runs and just three hits while striking out a career-high nine to pick up the victory...Gober (1-1) took the loss for Long Beach. Gossage and Garcia each had three hits to lead the Outlaws offense...Valdez added two hits and scored four times...and Benavidez finished the night 2-for-5. The Armada had eight hits, but no one had more than one hit on the evening. With Friday's win, the Outlaws improved to 2-9 on the season while the Armada slipped to 5-4 on the year. Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday, with right-hander Greg Bicknell (0-0) making his first start of the season for Chico...Long Beach will counter with righty Rik Currier (0-1). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:35pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or 1340 AM.
