Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Steve Booker's two-out, two-run single capped a six-run 8th inning and provided the game winner as the Chico Outlaws rallied from five runs down to nip Long Beach 7-6 Wednesday night at Nettleton Stadium...the exciting come-from-behind victory gave the Outlaws a three-game series sweep over the visiting Armada.

Long Beach used the long ball to grab a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning - with Jeff LaRue aboard, Samone Peters bombed a long home run off Chico starting pitcher Brian Kroll. The Outlaws sliced the Armada lead in half with an unearned run in the 3rd, but Long Beach got it back in the 5th - Randall Shelley's double plated Ryan Webb to give the Armada a 3-1 lead. Long Beach went up 6-1 with three unearned runs in the 6th - Chico shortstop Angelo Tavelli's bases loaded throwing error allowed Peters, Jeremy Hernandez and Chris Klemm to score.

With former big leaguer Bud Smith holding the Outlaws to just three hits through six innings, it appeared the Armada would snap its four game losing streak. But with Long Beach reliever Justin Ramsey on the mound in the bottom of the 8th, Chico launched its game-winning rally - with runners at the corners and one out, Mike Mallory lined a single to center to score Booker...then after Criag Kuzmic singled to right, Jason Van Meetren reached on an error by Hernandez; Desi Wilson scoring to make it 6-3. Whit Pierce promptly singled home Mallory...Lino Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Kuzmic to pull the Outlaws to within a run. Mike Peck was summonded from the Armada bullpen and walked pinch-hitter Jesse Kovacs to load the bases, setting the stage for Booker, who blooped the first pitch into right field...Van Meetren and pinch runner Alex Froloff scoring on the base hit to put Chico out in front 7-6. Outlaws left-hander A.J. Ampi came on in relief and tossed a scoreless 9th inning, striking out Chris Wakeland to end the game and lock down the series sweep of Long Beach.

Chris Searle (2-0), the third of four pitcher used by Outlaws manager Mark Parent, got credit for the win, with Ampi picking up his second save of the season...Ramsey (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Long Beach. Van Meetren had two of Chico's seven hits on the night...Shelley, Wakeland, LaRue and Peters each had multi-hit games as the Armada piled up 11 hits in the losing effort. With Wednesday's win, the Outlaws improved to 5-2 and maintained sole possession of first place in the Golden Baseball League...Long Beach dropped to 1-5 and farther into the GBL cellar, 3½ games back of front-running Chico. The Outlaws continue their nine-game homestand Thursday with the first of two against the Reno Silver Sox...Grant Gregg (0-1) will be on the mound for Chico in the series opener. Game time is 7:05pm.
