Outlaws, Slyers split twinbill

Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws and Fullerton Flyers wrapped up their four game season-opening series by splitting a doubleheader Sunday in front of over 1,600 at Nettleton Stadium - the Outlaws taking a 5-3 decision in the opener and the Flyers pounding out 14 hits en route to a 10-1 drubbing of Chico in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Outlaws sent right-hander Chris Searle to the mound...it was Searle's first professional appearance in nearly two years. He ran into trouble early, surrendering an RBI single to Rich Pohle in the 1st and later in the inning walking Chad Chop with the bases loaded to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. But former Outlaw Jeremy Sugarman was rocked in the bottom of the 1st...Chico sent eight men to the plate, and used run-scoring doubles by Desi Wilson and Craig Kuzmic, an RBI groundout by Mike Mallory and a single by Lino Garcia that drove home Kuzmic to take a 4-2 lead. The Flyers socred a run in the 2nd to pull to within one, but Searle and relievers Robert Anaya and A.J. Ampi combined to hold the Flyers to just one hit over the final five innings. Chico wrapped up the scoring with an insurance run in the 4th when Bobby Gandolfo doubled home Alex Froloff, making the score 5-3 and giving Searle his first pro victory since August 18, 2003...Ampi picked up his first save of the season.

It was a different story in the nightcap - Grant Gregg, last year's Golden Baseball League Pitcher of the Year, surrendered 10 hits in five innings of work, and though he allowed just one earned run, three Outlaws errors led to five unearned runs and a 6-0 Fullerton lead after three-and-a-half innings. The Flyers scored five times in the 4th - Peanut Williams and Rick Elder provided the key hits in the inning with a two-run double and an RBI triple respectively. Meanwhile, Chico could only scratch across one run against Fullerton starter Craig Frydendall...Jesse Kovacs' sacrifice fly plated Mike Mallory in the bottom of the 4th to make the score 6-1. But in the 6th the Flyers officially put the game away by reaching Outlaws reliever Kevin Beavers for four runs, and that was more than enough for Frydendall, who with relief help from Nick Casnova in the 7th shut down Chico the rest of the way to post the 10-1 win and the series split. Bret Levier had four hits to pace Fullerton...Jason Van Meetren and Jim Wallace had two hits apiece for the Outlaws in the losing effort.

Chico and Fullerton are both 2-2 on the young season...the Outlaws continue their nine-game homestand Monday with the first of three against the Long Beach Armada; game time is 7:05pm at Nettleton Stadium. Left-hander Alex Perez will make his first start of the year for the Outlaws in the series opener.
