The Fullerton Flyers moved into a first place tie with a 9-6 victory over the Reno Silver Sox behind a strong start from Todd Gelatka and a 2-Run homerun fron Rick Elder. The Flyers turned two double plays in the middle infield plus a stike em' out, throw 'em out double play by Gelatka and his catcher Sandy De Leon.
The offense struck for four runs in the 4th inning, including a 2-RBI single by Garry Templeton II, who finished with four hits. Rick Elder added a booming homerun over the right field wall in the 9th.
Todd Gelatka threw 6.2 innings giving up three runs on seven hits. After giving up one run in each of the first three innings, Gelatka settled down and put up scoreless frames in the middle innings. He was relieved by Ryan Olson and then Mike McTamney.
The Flyers also had a two run rally in the 3rd inning, which was started by Sandy De Leon's leadoff single. De Leon ended up with a three hit night. The Silver Sox had two homeruns of their own. The first was hit by Doug Hedvig off Gelatka and the second was an opposite field shot by Hector Zamora off Mike McTamney.
The Silver Sox cut the Flyers lead from six to three in the 9th, but McTamney retired the last two batters to close the first game of the three game series.
Game two will be played tomorrow night in Reno at 6:35. The starter for the Flyers will be Jeff Groeger and the Silver Sox have not announced their starting pitcher.
